Aichberg Castle
Aichberg Castle is located in the village of Aichberg, part of the municipality of Waldkirchen am Wesen in Upper Austria. Although it now resembles a farmhouse and its original character was altered by the demolition of the main tower in 1940, some features still point to its historical importance as a former moated castle.
History+
The first documented mention of Aichberg dates to 1140, when it was owned by Knight Heinrich von Aichberg, a vassal of the Lords of Wesen. After the extinction of the Wesen family, the estate passed via Hadmar von Waldeck to the Diocese of Passau, elevating Ulrich von Aichberg to a Passau ministerial in 1325. In 1446, the Oeder family, also ministerials of the Passau bishop, acquired the castle after the Aichberg line died out in 1455. From 1572 to 1814, Aichberg was owned by the Counts of Salburg, who transformed the original moated castle into a stately home. After the marriage of Maria Angelika Countess Salburg to Count Ludwig von Sprinzenstein, the castle became part of her dowry. Following her husband's death, she sold Aichberg in 1844 to Count Albert von Saint Julien.
