In Atzbach, Upper Austria, Aigen Castle stands as an example of a medieval fortress transformed into a castle. Its history dates back to the 15th century.

History+

Aigen was first documented in the mid-15th century, specifically in 1447 or 1449, when it was a fief of the Wallsee family. Around 1600, the original castle complex was converted into the present-day castle under the ownership of the Querrer von Wolfsegg family. The castle frequently changed hands, including Mathias Ostermann around 1750 and Franz von Hausladen from 1757. After World War II, Aigen Castle was confiscated as German property and stood empty until 1967, before being renovated by the Schausberger family.
