Åkeshov Castle

The original estate, once known as Nockeby, was owned by Stockholm councilman Peder Ålänning in the 15th century. In 1635, it came into the possession of Field Marshal Åke Axelsson of the Natt och Dag noble family, who had the castle, named after him, built around 1650. The estate once encompassed vast lands, which today include the Stockholm districts of Nockeby, Nockebyhov, Höglandet, Åkeslund, and Riksby. The original castle was two-storied with a hip roof, a prominent staircase, and two square outbuildings. In the 18th century, the castle underwent several renovations, including in 1723 and 1740 by architect Carl Hårleman, during which the staircase was removed and the roof shape altered, among other changes. In 1719, Russian prisoners of war were forced to build a wall around the estate. Over the centuries, ownership changed frequently, often through inheritance or marriage. In 1904, the City of Stockholm acquired the castle and its associated lands. After serving as a home for children with epilepsy, a special needs school, a refugee shelter, and a homeless asylum, as well as being leased to the Bromma parish, it has functioned as a hotel and conference center since 1988.

Today, Åkeshov Castle houses a hotel and conference center. Where an orangery once stood, there is now a greenhouse for tulips, which also includes a café and an art exhibition. The castle is accessible to visitors.
