Albini Castle

The origins of the current castle date back to the 12th century, when Staufer ministerials and the Lords of Hagen-Münzenberg built a moated castle on the Gersprenz river. This complex had a square layout of 60 meters per side and a keep in its center. It was closely connected to the city fortifications of Dieburg that emerged at the same time. In 1802, Baron Franz Joseph von Albini received the castle as a gift from Landgrave Ludwig X of Hesse. In 1809, he had most of the older buildings and fortifications demolished to erect a new, square castle complex in the southern area. Later, in 1902/03, the neo-Gothic former district office was built east of the castle.
