Albrechtsberg Castle, a complex in the Melk district of Lower Austria, is situated on a hill at the northwestern edge of the village of the same name. Originally a medieval castle, it was transformed into a Renaissance palace.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to the 12th century, when Albrecht von Perg, a member of the Lords of Perg and Machland, had the castle built. He was married to a Countess von Schalla, who brought possessions in the Pielach Valley into the marriage. Albrecht von Perg held Vogt rights over St. Pölten Monastery and was sub-Vogt of Melk Monastery. After the extinction of the Pergers, the castle partly passed to the Babenbergs and partly to the County of Plain. In 1581, the medieval complex was converted into a Renaissance castle.
