Albrechtsburg Castle
In Meissen, situated on a rocky plateau above the Elbe, Albrechtsburg Castle is a monument of the Late Gothic period and is considered to be the first castle built in Germany. Its appearance earned it the nickname “Saxon Acropolis,” and it remains a landmark of the region to this day.
History+
The origins of Albrechtsburg Castle date back to 929, when King Henry I, after the destruction of a Sorbian hillfort, sought a new location for a fortification and found it between the Elbe, Triebisch, and Meisa rivers. The rock became home to Misni Castle, which in 968 became the seat of a margrave and the bishop of the Diocese of Meissen. A burgraviate developed. In 1471, the grandsons of Elector Frederick IV, Ernst and Albrecht, commissioned master builder Arnold von Westfalen to construct a castle on the site of the old margrave’s castle. Although planned as a residence, it was not initially used as such.
