Alfter Castle
Alfter Castle is a listed secular building in Alfter, a municipality in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis (North Rhine-Westphalia).
History and Architecture+
The Lords de Halechte were first mentioned in 1117; from 1188, the hereditary marshal's office of Electoral Cologne was associated with the castle.
The irregularly enclosed rectangular complex was built in 1721. The horseshoe-shaped manor house and the farmyard date from the same period. The farmyard has been significantly altered to this day. The manor house is a two-story plastered building under hip roofs with tower-like corner structures. Originally, the building had red ashlar painting; today it is painted yellow. In the cellar of the northwestern corner building, masonry made of columnar basalt from around 1200 can still be seen.
