In the Rhein-Sieg district, Alfter Castle is a structure that fuses ancient history and modern utility. Originally a medieval castle, it now houses a university.

History+

The estate's origins stretch back, with the first mention of the Lords de Halechte in 1117. From 1188, the then-castle was associated with the hereditary marshal office of Electoral Cologne. The current irregularly rectangular complex was constructed in 1721. The horseshoe-shaped manor house and the farmyard also date from this period, although the latter has undergone alterations. In the cellar of the northwestern corner building, columnar basalt masonry from around 1200 can still be seen today.
