Schloss Birkenfeld+
Geschichte+
A predecessor building was already mentioned in 1265 as "castrorum de Spanheym". From 1511-1528, the castle was built by the Counts of Sponheim. In 1601, it was expanded into a hunting lodge and administrative building for the rear County of Sponheim. In 1698, the French destroyed the castle. Afterwards, it was rebuilt. In 1776, ownership transferred to the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken.
Architektur+
Das Schloss Birkenfeld ist ein dreiflügeliger Bau mit einem Ehrenhof. Der Hauptflügel ist dreigeschossig und hat einen Mittelrisalit mit einem Dreiecksgiebel. Die Seitenflügel sind zweigeschossig. Im Inneren sind noch einige historische Räume erhalten, darunter der Rittersaal und die Schlosskapelle.
Heutige Nutzung+
Heute beherbergt das Schloss Birkenfeld das Landratsamt des Landkreises Birkenfeld. Es ist auch ein beliebtes Ziel für Touristen und wird für verschiedene Veranstaltungen genutzt.
