Almegg Castle

Almegg was first mentioned in 1183 as property of Kremsmünster Abbey, which granted the then-castle as a fief to the ministerialis Otto de alben. In the 14th century, the feudal sovereignty transferred to the sovereign, and in 1380, Stephan der Sachs was named as a vassal of Duke Albrecht III. The Sachs family held the property until 1511, after which it was divided between the Barons of Ragendorf and Vinzenz Schaler. From 1530, the Aspan family was again in undivided possession. In 1626, Almegg suffered looting and fire damage by General Löbel and his soldiers. Through marriage, the castle passed from the Aspans to the Albrechtsheimers and later to Achaz Hohenfelder, remaining in his family until 1808. After several changes of ownership, in 1870, Baron Franz von Handel and his wife Marie von Guaita acquired the estate, which remains in their family's possession to this day.
