Altenberg Castle

The origins of Altenberg Castle date back to the late 17th century, when Franz Anton von Haydegg had the building constructed. Previously, a farm known since the 16th century was located on this site. In 1740, the Haydegg family was forced to sell the castle and its associated lands. In 1790, Anton Schellenbauer acquired the estate and managed it together with Schütting Castle. Schellenbauer was ennobled in 1794 but lost this title when he was arrested for fraud in 1817. After his arrest, the castle passed into the possession of the Haffner family from Graz. In 1903, Countess Nyary acquired the estate, and her family lived there for about thirty years. In 1911, under the Nyary counts, an extension was added to the east side, increasing the castle to approximately double its original size. During World War II, the castle served as accommodation for forced laborers. From the 1960s until 1972, it was operated as a restaurant. The last renovation took place in 1976.
