Altenberg Castle
Altenberg Castle is first mentioned in 1374 as being owned by Heinz von Westerstetten ("residing in Altenberg"). In 1449, the castle was destroyed by citizens of Giengen and subsequently rebuilt. In July 1637, the castle burned down during the Thirty Years' War and was rebuilt. Until 1666, the castle was owned by Dietrich von Freyberg, who sold it to Johann Gottfried Freiherr von Syrgenstein. In 1693, a new castle was built by Franz Johann Ferdinand Freiherr von Syrgenstein. In 1798, ownership changed to the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein. In 1891, the western half of the castle was demolished. In 1982, the Free State of Bavaria acquired the castle, which it sold in 1986 to Princess Clotilde of Liechtenstein. From 1990-93, the castle underwent extensive renovation.
