In Altenburg, Thuringia, Altenburg Castle stands on a porphyry rock. Once a residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg, it is now a cultural hub and known as the scene of the Altenburg Princely Abduction.

History+

The origins of the castle date back a long way: a Slavic rampart once stood on this site. In 976, Altenburg was first documented by Emperor Otto III. The complex was repeatedly visited and expanded by emperors such as Lothar III and Frederick II. Under Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa), the imperial palace developed into a center in the 12th century. From 1307, the Wettins took over the rule. An event was the Altenburg Princely Abduction in 1455, during which Princes Ernst and Albrecht were kidnapped.
