Altengronau Castle

Wasserschloss Altengronau is a lowland castle located in the Altengronau district of the municipality of Sinntal in the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse.

The moated castle is situated at an elevation of approximately 225 meters above sea level in the southwest of Altengronau, in a strategically favorable location at the confluence of the two rivers Sinn and Gronau.

The hilltop castle of the Lords of Hutten zu Gronau, located on the Frauenberg, was severely damaged in a feud with the Count of Hanau in 1492 and subsequently left to decay. The feud was preceded by the unlawful collection of a tax demanded by Philipp I (the Younger) of Hanau-Münzenberg from his subjects in the Schwarzenfels court, as well as from the Hutten serfs. Large parts of the Hessian nobility then declared solidarity with the Lords of Hutten; further letters of feud from the Franconian knighthood followed.

Subsequently, Eitel Sebastian von Hutten began constructing Wasserschloss Altengronau (also known as the "new house") as a valley castle in 1506. The construction was placed under the protection of the Hessian Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous in 1527, but was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.

Remains of the building later served as the basis for a paper mill operation. With the construction of the Jossa-Wildflecken railway line, these were incorporated into the stone processing company Gerhäuser Marmorwerke. The main house and the granary of the moated castle are still visible today, as are the moat and remnants of the curtain wall.
