Altenhain Castle

The origins of the village of Altenhain date back to the 11th or 12th century, with the first documented mention of the place name dating to 1358. A manor house was acquired here in 1330 by the von Große family. The property changed hands several times. In 1742, it passed to Theodor August Freiherr von Hohenthal, who later bequeathed it to his daughter Getraude Gräfin von Brühl. After her death in 1783, it reverted to her father, who, however, died in the same year. Owners such as Friedrich Leopold von Bißing and Christian Gottlob Vetter followed. In 1858, Friedrich Wilhelm Kabitzsch had the manor house built in the early Renaissance style according to plans by the Leipzig architect Mothes, supplemented by a tower-like extension in 1871. After the expropriation of the last private owner, Dietrich von Gontard, in 1945 by the communists, the castle fell into disrepair.
