Altenhausen Castle in Saxony-Anhalt combines elements of a medieval lowland castle with later Renaissance and Neo-Gothic additions. It is situated in the northern part of the village of Altenhausen and is now a venue for cultural events and a youth hostel.

History+

The origins of Altenhausen Castle date back to the 11th or 12th century, when a lowland castle was built on this site. The first documentary mention occurred in 1303. After the original noble family of the Counts of Altenhausen died out in the mid-13th century, the Dukes of of Brunswick and the Archbishops of Magdeburg vied for possession. In 1351, during a feud, the castle was conquered and destroyed by Magdeburg troops but rebuilt by the Brunswick side. After further conflicts and pledges, the complex fell to the Archbishop of Magdeburg in 1370, who soon pledged it to a Brunswick knightly family. Following raids by the knights, the castle had to be returned in 1371.
