Altenhof Castle

The first documented mention of Altenhof Castle dates back to 1204, when Wernhardus de Altinhoven was named as its owner. Originally, Altenhof belonged to the dominion of the Falkensteiner family, an influential lineage that shaped the development of the region north of the Danube in the 13th century. Through marriage, Falkenberg passed to the Witigonen, before falling to the sovereign in 1289 under Duke Albrecht I of Austria. In the following centuries, Altenhof was administered by burgraves, pledged, or granted as a fief, including Leopold von Jedesberg in 1303 and later the Jagenreuter family in the early 15th century. After various owners, including the Melabrunner family, the Hörleinsperger family held the fief from 1485 to 1602. In 1602, Altenhof came into the possession of the Counts of Salburg, who united it with Falkenstein and undertook renovations.
