Altenhof Castle (Kaldenkirchen)

The "Aldenhoven" estate was already mentioned in 1312. The moated castle, located on the "Landwehr" between the Duchies of Jülich and Geldern, was a Jülich fief. Haus Altenhof was sold to Heinrich von Spee (of Wankum) in 1356; the manor remained in the possession of the Lords of Spee until 1662, when Baron von Spee moved his residence to Heltorf Castle (Kaiserswerth). The estate came into the possession of the Schmasen family in 1833. After the Schmasen family, the Underberg family, who are still the owners today, acquired the manor in 1863.
