A historic moated castle, Altenmuhr Castle is in Muhr am See in the Bavarian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen. This structure is one of the oldest castle complexes in the upper Altmühl Valley, gaining renown through its mention in Schiller's "The Robbers" and as a filming location for "The Robber Hotzenplotz."

The origins of Altenmuhr Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was built by the Lords of Muhr, ministeriales of the Eichstätt bishops. A detailed description of the castle first appears in the Salbuch of 1551. In the 14th century, the estate passed into the possession of the Lords of Lentersheim. After the extinction of this family, the villages of Alten- and Neuenmuhr, along with their castles, fell to the Principality of Ansbach. When Ansbach became Prussian, King Frederick William III of Prussia transferred the castle in 1799 to Minister Karl August von Hardenberg. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, the castle underwent several renovations. Since 1837, the property has been owned by the Le Suire family.
