Altprerau Castle

The castle was first mentioned in 1591 as being owned by Baron von Breuner. In 1809, the castle was plundered by the French.

The exact origins of the castle are shrouded in mystery. It is believed that a fortified structure already stood on this site in the 12th century, serving as a strategic outpost to control the trade routes along the river. However, concrete evidence from this period is scarce.

During the 14th and 15th centuries, the estate likely underwent several transformations, evolving from a simple fortification into a more comfortable residence for local nobility. Architectural fragments discovered during later renovations suggest a gradual expansion and modernization.

The mention of Freiherr von Breuner in 1591 marks a significant turning point. Under the Breuner family, the castle experienced a period of extensive rebuilding and artistic flourishing. The medieval structures were largely replaced or integrated into a grander Renaissance design, reflecting the family's wealth and influence.

In the 17th century, the castle was further transformed in the Baroque style. Elaborate stucco work, frescoes, and a magnificent garden were added, turning the castle into a true jewel of the region. This era saw the construction of the impressive main hall and the chapel, which still stand today as testaments to Baroque artistry.

The year 1809 brought devastation when the castle was plundered by French troops during the Napoleonic Wars. Many valuable artifacts were lost, and parts of the interior were severely damaged. The castle subsequently fell into a period of decline.

In the late 19th century, efforts were made to restore the castle, though it never fully regained its former glory. It changed hands several times throughout the 20th century, serving various purposes, including a temporary hospital during World War II.

Today, the castle is privately owned and partially open to the public for guided tours and special events, allowing visitors to glimpse its rich and complex history.
