Amecke Castle, a historic estate in the Hochsauerlandkreis, is situated on Lake Sorpesee in North Rhine-Westphalia. The structure was originally known as "Castrum Adenbecke."

History+

The first documented mention of Amecke Castle dates back to 1338. In 1419, it was divided into an upper and a lower house. While the lower house remained in the possession of the Barons von Wrede-Amecke for centuries, the upper house changed hands around 1530 through marriage, coming into the possession of Johann von Heygen zu Ewig und Amecke. He bequeathed it to his son Heinrich von Heygen zu Amecke in 1571. It was not until 1758 that the von Wrede family managed to reacquire the upper house. Until 1830, the manor house was surrounded by a moat.
