Amerang Castle

Amerang Castle in Amerang was first mentioned in a document in 1072. It has been family-owned since the 14th century. The lord of the castle is Ortholf Frhr. von Crailsheim, who lives in the castle with his wife Giulia (née Larisch) and at the same time makes it accessible to the public: The popular castle concerts take place every summer in the Renaissance arcaded inner courtyard, and the castle museum offers insights into the eventful history of the noble residence in the upper Chiemgau. The most important structural change occurred in 1530, when the Italian Scaliger, a noble family from Verona, became lords of Amerang Castle. They provided the inner courtyard of the medieval circular castle with the unique three-story Renaissance arcades, whose acoustics are ideal for concerts. From 1995 to 1998, the castle was saved from decay with the help of public funds and thoroughly renovated. An important contribution to all measures inside and outside is made by the "Förderverein Schloss Amerang" (Friends of Amerang Castle), founded in 1974 - with 1200 members, the largest German association promoting a private historical monument. The unique ambience of Amerang Castle is sought after all year round for celebrations of all kinds, especially weddings. In addition to the Renaissance inner courtyard, the Three-Column Hall, the Renaissance Cellar, the Scaliger Room, the Gothic Cellar, the Baroque Lamberg Hall and the late Gothic chapel renovated in 1997 are available here.

Amerang in the Chiemgau foothills owes its name to Emmer, a type of wheat of our ancestors. Amerang Castle was first mentioned in a document as a noble seat in 1072. In the 16th century, the exiled lords of Verona, the Scaliger, built a trapezoidal arcaded courtyard into the old Gothic castle. Before the "Lords of the Ladder", as the Scaliger also called themselves, the Laiminger tournament bailiffs and one of Bavaria's most important families resided here. After the Scaliger, the Counts of Lamberg were lords of Amerang. Georg Sigmund was one of the most influential and also richest lords in Austria at that time. His son, Prince Maximilian von Lamberg, Lord of Steyr, ended the Thirty Years' War as an envoy of Austria, among other things. From the Lambergs, the castle came to the current owner family, the Barons von Crailsheim, through marriage in 1821. For over 700 years and over 23 generations, Amerang Castle has not only been the venue for outstanding cultural events and celebrations, but also an old family residence.
