Amerdingen Castle

Amerdingen Castle is located in the Kessel valley on the edge of the municipality of Amerdingen in the Donau-Ries district. It is owned by the comital family Schenk von Staufenberg and is normally not accessible to the public. However, in June of each year, concerts take place in the bel étage of the castle during the Rosetti Festival in Nördlinger Ries.
Since the 13th century, local nobility, the Lords of Amerdingen, have been documented in Amerdingen. In 1333, the noble family von Scheppach acquired the manor. After the death of Veit von Scheppach, it passed to Schenk Hans von Stauffenberg. Amerdingen and the associated castle were destroyed several times in the following centuries.
Johann Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg had the current building constructed between 1784 and 1788 according to plans by the Bamberg master builder Lorenz Finck.

The castle consists of a three-story, hip-roofed rectangular building, to which two single-story, hip-roofed wing buildings are attached, thus enclosing the almost square castle courtyard. The slightly protruding central risalit in natural stone cladding with pilasters, a round-arched portal, and an iron balcony structures the classical facade, in whose gable triangle the coats of arms of the families von Stauffenberg and Zobel von Giebelstadt are carved. The interiors were decorated by the Würzburg stucco artist Materno Bossi. All main rooms of the representative country house face the park side:
::The central room on the first floor is the 'Great Hall', located above the garden hall. To the south follow the music rooms and the Johann-Franz-Salon, to the north the writing salon and the former bedroom of the lady of the castle. Connected by double-leaf doors, the Great Hall and salons form an enfilade. Stuccoed ceilings and walls structured by stucco pilasters with landscape paintings and figures adorn the walls. Some salons are covered with ornamental and pictorial wallpapers (Schmitt 1995, p. 101).
The stately building is surrounded by a landscape garden laid out in the English style, which is concluded by a small columned temple with a dome roof built in 1795.
