Andelfingen Castle

The first documented mention of Andelfingen Castle dates back to 1361, though it was already owned by the Truchsesses of Diessenhofen in 1320 and later by the Lords of Hohenlandenberg. In 1434, the city of Zurich acquired the dominion of Andelfingen and established a bailiwick. From 1482, a separate bailiff resided in the castle, which was subsequently renovated and improved multiple times, including extensive refurbishments in 1507 and 1547. Between 1613 and 1614, a new castle was built east of the parish church, housing not only the bailiff's living quarters but also an armory and an archive. By the mid-18th century, the building was dilapidated, leading to the commissioning of master builder Grubenmann in 1779. Three years later, Bailiff Hans Kaspar Lavater moved into the current castle. After the abolition of the bailiwick in 1798, the castle was sold in 1832 to Baron Johann Heinrich von Sulzer-Wart. The Sulzer family lived there for almost a century before Alfred Baur donated the property to the municipality in 1923, on the condition that it retain its character and the park remain publicly accessible. From 1925 to 1999, it served as a retirement home. Today, it houses the district administration office and is used for events.
