History+
The exact date of the castle's origin can no longer be determined, but a document from around 1520 confirms the existence of a predecessor building called Oberweiher. From 1530, the moated castle was regularly granted as a fief by the Archbishops of Salzburg. After a renovation in 1693 by Johann Ernst Graf von Thun, it passed to the Bishops of Chiemsee, who used it as a summer residence until 1806. The last of these bishops, Sigmund Christoph von Zeil und Trauchburg, had the English castle park laid out. With the transfer of the Archbishopric of Salzburg to Austria in 1806, the castle became state property. In 1837, Aloys von Arco-Stepperg, a great-grandson of Empress Maria Theresia, acquired the estate.
