In the mountain village of Anras, Anras Castle stands as a significant secular monument in East Tyrol. It served as a former administrative building and summer residence of the Bishops of Brixen and functions today as a cultural center.

History+

The history of Anras Castle is closely linked to the Bishops of Brixen, who used the property as a summer residence from the 12th century onwards. Between 1200 and 1803, it served as a retreat for the bishops. In 1236, Emperor Frederick II extended the secular power of the Diocese of Brixen to the Anras dominion. This led to the development of property administration and jurisdiction on site, whose sphere of influence extended to Obertilliach and the Lienzer Klause. A Baroque expansion shaped the castle in 1754. After its acquisition by the Messerschmitt Foundation in 1991, the castle underwent extensive restoration.
