Appenzell Castle

To be privately owned

Appenzell Castle, a prominent structure in the town of the same name, ranks among the most significant stone constructions in the region. It harmoniously combines Gothic elements with Renaissance architectural features, significantly shaping the historic townscape.

History+

The castle was built in 1563 for the wealthy physician Antoni Löw, a leading figure among the Reformed in Appenzell. In 1584, Löw was accused of slandering a priest, sentenced to death, and executed. After his death, the castle became state property and served as accommodation for the Franciscans until 1682, when they moved to their new Maria zum Engel monastery. Subsequently, Antoni Speck resided in the property until his death in 1708. The castle then remained in the Sutter family's possession. In 1875, physician Anton Alfred Sutter acquired sole ownership and established his practice there, which is why the building is also known in Appenzell as the “Doctor’s House.”

Location+

Appenzell Castle is located in the town of Appenzell, in the district of Appenzell, Canton Appenzell Innerrhoden, Switzerland, at an elevation of approx. 786 m above sea level.

On site+

Appenzell Castle is currently privately owned. The building presents itself as a four-story structure on a square floor plan with a hipped roof. The facades are horizontally structured by several cornices and canopies. A round stair tower in the center of the west facade, with a columned hall in front of it, emphasizes the vertical dimension. Inside, there are Gothic window groups divided by stone Renaissance columns; a window mullion on the first floor bears the year 1570.
