Arbing Castle

The first documented mention of Arbing occurred in 1137, when a "Gerboto de Arbingin" was named as a vassal under Gottschalk von Perge-Machland. In 1288, the estate passed to the ministerial family of the Wetzel von Arbing, who owned it until 1406. Subsequently, ownership changed frequently: in 1464, the lordship was granted to Pilgrim Walch, and later it belonged to Lassla Prager. The Walchen, who then called themselves Walchen von Arbing, built the church of Arbing as a private church in 1483 and redesigned the castle. In 1523, Simon Geyer von Osterberg acquired the property, followed by other members of his family. In 1544, Karl Geyer von Osterberg sold the castle to the Beck von Leopoldsdorf. After further changes of ownership, including the Yslung von Tratzberg and again the Geyer von Osterburg, Baron Hans Jakob Löbel bought Arbing in 1602. Through marriage, it came into the possession of Rudolf von Sprinzenstein, whose family sold it to Count Leonhard Helfrich von Meggau in 1622.
