Aschach Castle

The construction of Aschach Castle began in 1165 under Poppo VI of Henneberg and was continued by his son Poppo VII. After his death in 1245, the estate passed to his nephew Heinrich. In the 14th century, due to financial difficulties of the Hennebergs, the castle was pledged and in 1391 sold to Dietrich von Bibra. In 1401, the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, Johann I von Egloffstein, acquired the castle, which later returned to the Counts of Henneberg and finally back to the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, remaining in their possession for about 300 years. During the Peasants' War of 1525, Aschach Castle was occupied and set on fire but rebuilt by 1527. Another destruction occurred in 1553 during the Margrave War, after which it was rebuilt in its current form under Prince-Bishop Friedrich von Wirsberg. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle briefly changed hands to the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf.
