Aspenstein Castle

The origins of Aspenstein Castle date back to the late 17th century. Between 1675 and 1694, it was built on behalf of Benediktbeuern Monastery, at a time when Kochel was still under monastic rule. It served the Benedictine monks as a place of recreation and the abbots as a summer residence. After secularization in 1803, the castle passed to the Bavarian state and subsequently changed ownership several times. Owners included the financial councilor Georg Freiherr von Stengel, the wine merchant Ignaz Huber, and the Dessauer family. In 1936, the then Reich Youth Leader Baldur von Schirach acquired the property. After World War II, in 1945, the castle once again became Bavarian property.
