Assenheim Castle

The origins of Assenheim Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when the Lords of Münzenberg erected a castle at this location, near the confluence of the Wetter and Nidda rivers. Erchiboldus de Assenheim is mentioned as a castellan in 1184, suggesting the castle's construction between 1170 and 1184 under Kuno I of Münzenberg. After the extinction of the Münzenberg family in 1255, the inheritance was divided, with the Falkenstein family taking over the majority of the property and one-sixth falling to the Lords of Hanau. Assenheim received town rights and a town wall in 1277. Following the extinction of the Falkenstein family in 1418, their share was again divided. In 1461, Kuno of Solms-Lich inherited Assenheim. Count Friedrich zu Solms-Rödelheim founded the County of Solms-Rödelheim in 1607, and his descendants remain the owners to this day. In the 16th century, a new castle was built as a residence. From 1722, Assenheim became the permanent residence.
