Assumstadt Castle

Assumstadt Castle is a Baroque castle in Assumstadt, a residential area belonging to the Möckmühl district of Züttlingen in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg.

The castle was built on the site of an older castle starting in 1769 under the direction of the Prague architect Paul Wiedhopf, possibly based on designs by his compatriot Johann Joseph Wirch, and is surrounded by a large park. The Assumstadt church, demolished in 1799, was located on the open space in front of the castle. The castle building was a gift from the Austrian Empress Maria Theresia to her former Generalfeldzeugmeister Karl Reinhard von Ellrichshausen, whose family had held local rule in Assumstadt since 1667. Doors, ovens, windows, and floors are partly copies from Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The copies were made in Prague. The castle was sold by Ellrichshausen's descendants in 1937 to Hubert Graf zu Waldburg-Wolfegg, whose family still owns the property today.
