In the north of Lohmar lies Schloss Auel, an estate documented since the late 14th century. Originally a moated castle, it now presents itself as a palace.

History+

The first documented mention of Schloss Auel dates back to 1391, when it was known as a moated castle under Peter van Auel. It served as the family seat for various noble families, including the von Meuchen and the von Proff zu Menden. The current main building was constructed in 1763. Since 1818, the castle has been owned by the von La Valette-St. George family, who acquired it through the marriage of Philippe de la Valette to Franziska von Broe. Guests of the castle included historical figures such as Napoléon Bonaparte, Tsar Alexander I of Russia, and the later Emperor Wilhelm II.
