Augustenburg Castle

The origins of Augustenburg Castle date back to the 10th century, when a predecessor building was erected, which served as a prebend house from the 12th century onwards. Margrave Christoph I of Baden acquired the property and had it converted into a princely residence. Under Karl II of Baden-Durlach, it underwent expansion with the addition of two semicircular towers and two wings. The castle received its current name in memory of Augusta Maria of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, the wife of Friedrich Magnus of Baden-Durlach. After the destruction of Karlsburg Castle in Durlach in 1689, it temporarily served as a residence. Augusta Maria, who had received the castle as a gift from her husband in 1678, initiated renovations from 1699.
