Aurich Castle

The history of the site dates back to the 14th century, when around 1380, the tom Brok family erected a first chieftain's castle, the so-called Nieburg. This was razed around 1430 during conflicts. In the mid-15th century, specifically 1447, Count Ulrich I Cirksena had the Averborg built opposite the old complex, a quadrangular structure with four corner towers, surrounded by ramparts and moats. After a fire in 1568, a reconstruction in Renaissance style took place, during which two towers were removed. Under Edzard II, Aurich became a residential city. The current castle was built between 1851 and 1855 under Hanoverian rule on the foundations of the Averborg. It was constructed in the English Tudor style of Historicism and served administrative purposes from the outset.
