Aurolzmünster Castle

The castle's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when two noble residences existed in Aurolzmünster. In 1312, Albert der Tannberger acquired the property of the Counts of Halls, and in 1375, Johannes der Tannberger united both estates by purchasing the Murhaimer's seat. Johann von Tannberg achieved the elevation of Aurolzmünster to a Hofmark in 1394. The Tannberg family owned the castle, which also included the neighboring Forchtenau Castle, until 1682. Following the financial strains of the Thirty Years' War and the burning of the upper castle, the property was transferred to Ferdinand Franz Albrecht Count von der Wahl. Between 1691 and 1711, the castle was rebuilt according to plans by Johann Kaspar Zucalli, completed by Anton Rica. The wall paintings in the large central hall are by Johann Eustachius Kendlbacher.
