Bachra Castle

The first documented mention of the place Bachere (lying by the stream) occurred before 1157. In 1260, a Cistercian nunnery was founded. In the late Middle Ages, there was a frequent change of noble rulers over the place. In 1505, Hans von Werthern bought the village. From 1607, it was in the possession of the Werthern/Wiehe line.

In 1834, a fire destroyed large parts of the village. In 1864/65, the castle was rebuilt by the Werthern family. 

In April 1945, the US Army occupied Bachra and was replaced by the Red Army in early July. The castle and manor (263 hectares) were expropriated without compensation, the von Werthern family was expelled and banned from the district. The castle inventory fell victim to looting. The castle became a quarantine station, in 1946 a party school of the SED, and from 1951 a primary school. In the course of the land reform in the Soviet Occupation Zone, the land was distributed to new farmers, who later, together with old owners, formed the LPG "Frohes Schaffen" (Happy Creation).

In 2000, the castle passed into private hands.
