Baldern Castle

The first documented mention of Baldern Castle dates to the 11th century. In the mid-12th century, it was owned by the Lords of Baldern before passing to Count Ludwig V of Oettingen in 1280. After being mortgaged in the 15th century, the castle was redeemed in 1507. It acquired its current Baroque appearance between 1718 and 1737 under the direction of Franz and later Gabriel de Gabrieli. With the extinction of the Oettingen-Baldern line in 1798, the estate passed to the Princely House of Oettingen-Wallerstein. In the 19th century, the hilltop was transformed into a landscaped garden, and in 1887, the tower was erected under August von Beyer. Baldern Castle was opened to the public as early as 1896.
