Balgstädt Castle

In the year 1616, the Balgstädt manor came into the possession of the Heßler family. After the end of the 30 Years' War, the last Swedes left this area in 1650. Hans Friedrich von Heßler from Burgheßler built a new castle in Balgstädt and moved from Burgheßler to Balgstädt. He died in 1667 and the property passed to his son Georg Rudolf von Heßler.

He died, only 46 years old, in 1687 and was buried in the Balgstädt church. The portrait of Georg Rudolf von Heßler, beautifully framed, is still in the Balgstädt church today.

In 1728, Privy Councillor Karl Dietrich von Schieck bought the heavily indebted manor.

In 1744, Ernst Sperling acquired it. He had the castle, which was partly still made of wood, rebuilt into its still preserved form. In 1945, the von Sperling family was dispossessed and expelled by the communists.

Today, the castle forms the cultural center of the village. It houses the children's facility, the community office, and not least the office of the Balgstädt Leisure and Tourism Association e.V.
