In Künzelsau, northeastern Baden-Württemberg, stands Bartenau Castle. Originally a medieval castle, it was transformed into a Renaissance palace in the late 17th century and now serves as an educational institution.

History+

The origins of the estate date back to the 11th century, when the noble family of Stein was based in Künzelsau. After their extinction, their property passed to related lines, including the Lords of Künzelsau, who built Kunzelsawe Castle around 1248. When the Künzelsau family died out in 1341, their residence became Bartenau Castle, which later fell to the Lords of Bartenau. After their extinction in 1390, the Lords of Stetten inherited the complex and sold parts of it to the Archbishopric of Mainz in 1484.
