Basthorst Castle

The origins of Schloss Basthorst date back to 1821, when Ernst Johann Wilhelm von Schack, a government councillor from Schwerin, acquired land and had the village and estate of Basthorst newly established there. The estate's name honors Basthorst in the Duchy of Lauenburg, the home of the von Schack family. Between 1823 and 1824, the Neoclassical manor house was built, which the family moved into in early 1825. Around 1850, Albecht von Schack, the builder's son, expanded the complex with additional farm buildings. A transformation into a castle began in 1900 under the owner Karl Tust, who commissioned architect Gustav Hamann.
