Baum Castle

The former hunting lodge Schloss Baum near Bückeburg is an example of late Baroque Classicism. Built on behalf of Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe, it remains to this day in the possession of the House of Schaumburg-Lippe. The complex is integrated into an English landscape garden and features a grotto system with early Baroque portals.
History+
Schloss Baum was constructed between 1760 and 1761 under Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe. The early Baroque portals of the grotto system, now part of the castle, were installed as early as 1758 and likely originated between 1604 and 1606, initially created for Bückeburg Castle. In 1776, Count Wilhelm had a pyramid-shaped family mausoleum built near the castle, whose terraced surfaces were once adorned with ornamental plants. The castle's name is said to derive from a barrier that once served for customs collection at the principality's border.
