Baumgarten Castle

Baumgarten Castle is a castle in Ollersbach in the Lower Austrian municipality of Neulengbach.

It is an example of the many country castles in Austria where no spectacular historical events took place and which have no particular architectural highlights. Although it was owned by several families of the Austrian high nobility, their representatives hardly lived here, as they had their residences amidst more significant lordships. Baumgarten was primarily economically interesting to them as the center of an estate operation.

The former Baumgarten Castle is first mentioned in a document in 1074 as the property of the high free lords of Ollersbach. They were followed by the ministeriales of Totzenbach, who later called themselves "of Baumgarten". In 1565, the complex was owned by the Counts Trauttmansdorff, who converted the castle into a palace.

During the Second Turkish Siege in 1683, the only weakly fortified castle was destroyed by Turkish raiders, but was soon rebuilt afterwards. The formerly three-story main wing in the south was rebuilt with only two stories, and the other three wings, which had previously been only one-story, were raised to two stories.

In 1945, the castle was burned down again, but was completely restored externally by Walter Lechner. The interior was furnished in a modern style. Baumgarten remained in bourgeois hands. In 2001, it was auctioned off again. The current owner is the Wimmer-Schick family. Parts of the castle, which houses various businesses, can be rented for seminars and events.
