Bauschlott Castle

Bauschlott Castle in Neulingen, Bauschlott district, in the Enzkreis, houses the Ethiopia House, the Regional History Exhibition, and the Schlossschänke (Castle Tavern).

After 1500, the place came into the possession of the Lords of Wallstein, who built the predecessor of today's Bauschlott Castle. Eglof von Wallstein (1531 – 1570) acquired six farmsteads to the west of the village for this purpose and began construction of the castle in 1532. This was initially a moated castle with four towers. After Eglof von Wallstein's death, the castle came into the possession of his sister, who was married to a Hans Wilhelm von Landenberg. The son of this sister sold the estate in 1604 for 16,000 guilders to Margrave Georg Friedrich von Baden-Durlach. In 1609, he sold it to the Privy Councillor Erhardt von Rammingen in Durlach for 13,000 guilders. In 1692, the Westphalian nobleman Johann Philipp von Schell acquired it; he was elevated to Edler von Bauschlott in 1695. His son then sold the estate in 1726 for 20,000 guilders to Margrave Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach, the founder of Karlsruhe. Over many decades, several renovations and new constructions were carried out by various master builders. In 1748, master builder J.H. Arnoldt; from 1764 – 1766, master builder W.J. Müller; and in 1805, Friedrich Weinbrenner. In 1805, Karl Friedrich von Baden-Durlach had the old dilapidated castle demolished, and Friedrich Weinbrenner erected a new country house on the foundations, while the dairy and other older outbuildings were preserved.

On May 17, 1871, Rosalie Luise Freiin von Beust married here.

The castle came into the possession of the Margrave of Baden in 1909 and became a convalescent home for children from the city of Pforzheim in 1919. In 1961, the Stuttgart doctor Stefan Sandkühler bought the castle, and it remains in private ownership today.
