Bedburg Castle, a structure in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, is an example of the evolution from a defensive fortification to a noble residence. Originally a moated castle located in the marshy Erft lowlands.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 12th century, when a castle belonging to the Lords of Bedburg was first mentioned. This early complex, likely serving to secure an Erft crossing, was destroyed in 1278 by Archbishop Siegfried of Westerburg of Cologne. A new construction in the Gothic style was undertaken by Johann von Reifferscheid, who built a castle-like complex with three wings around an inner courtyard, fortified with two rectangular and two round towers. Built of brick, this complex is one of the oldest brick castles in the Rhineland.
