Behringen Castle

The origins of Behringen Castle date back to the 16th century, when the von Wangenheim family began its construction and owned it until its expropriation in 1945. There was likely a predecessor building. Under Friedrich the Middle von Wangenheim, the construction of the current castle began in the mid-16th century, with parts of the south wing and east wing dating from this period. After a fire in 1621, interior renovations were carried out under Balthasar von Wangenheim. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle burned again in 1631 and was plundered in 1632, leading to it being uninhabitable for a time. In the Baroque period, particularly under Ernst Wilhelm von Wangenheim between 1743 and 1792, further construction work was undertaken and the castle park was laid out.
