Belgershain Castle

The origins of the castle date back to the 11th or 12th century, when a moated castle was built on this site to protect the nearby Via Regia Lusatiae Superioris trade route. Margrave Wiprecht von Groitzsch commissioned its construction after 1104. By 1330, the castle was owned by Heinrich von Trebsen. Ownership later changed hands, including the Burgraves of Leisnig and the von Pflugk family. From 1551, Belgershain became the seat of a knight's estate. By around 1600, the conversion of the fortress into a residential palace was largely complete, with the interiors taking their current form in the 17th century. Features include a spiral staircase and a hall with cross vaults. Porphyry doorframes still display Renaissance forms. The von Uechteritz family acquired the castle in 1792 and had it rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style in the early 19th century.
