Benkhausen Castle

The origins of the Benkhausen estate date back to 1510, when it was created by the division of the Ellerburg estate among the heirs of the von Münch family. Between 1657 and 1683, the current castle building was erected. In 1773, the estate passed by inheritance to the von dem Bussche family, who subsequently called themselves von dem Bussche-Münch. After World War II, in 1945, the castle was confiscated by the British occupation forces and served as the headquarters of the British Army of the Rhine and from 1952 as the command post of the British Navy.
