Berbisdorf Castle

Moated castles exude a very special charm, as they are something special and, due to their location, inspire fantasies. The moated castle in Berbisdorf, only a few kilometers from Moritzburg Hunting Lodge, also transports visitors in thought to an old water castle. Although the presumed construction around 1100 is not proven by anything, it is clear that a complex must have existed here many centuries ago.

Berbisdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1357, although the place is likely to be considerably older. Berbisdorf is the ancestral home of the Lords of Berbisdorf, who acquired large and rich possessions through the Freiberg mining industry. Over the centuries, ownership changed frequently. The moated castle was probably built in the 16th century on a rectangular island surrounded on three sides by the Promnitzbach stream. Hans Siegmund von Zeidler had the castle converted into a three-wing complex with an inner courtyard in the last third of the 17th century. The manor house opposite the castle also dates back to the same owner. A monogram on the manor gate refers to the year 1670.

In the 18th century, Berbisdorf Castle received Baroque additions. However, the appearance of the current castle dates back to renovations in the 19th century. In 1878, on behalf of Anna Hedwig von Decken, the three-wing complex was transformed into a rectangular building. The courtyard was built over. During further changes, Otto Freiherr von Spörcken added a tower to the eastern part of the complex in 1889.

Berbisdorf Castle is a simply designed building on a square floor plan. The two-story building with a surrounding hip roof features delicate continuous plaster articulation. Two single-story cavalier houses from the 18th century formerly flanked the bridge leading to a terrace at the castle. However, only the enclosing walls of the left cavalier house remain. The stately Baroque entrance portal comes from the previous building.

Unfortunately, Berbisdorf Moated Castle has also suffered the fate of other Saxon castles. After the land reform, the castle initially served as a children's home and apprentice dormitory. But since 1990, no further use could be found. Thus, the historically significant place now leaves an unkempt impression. The bridge is increasingly overgrown; the castle and the manor buildings are slowly decaying.
