Berg Castle

The origins of the castle likely date back to the 9th or 10th century, when a moated castle was built on this site. The first documentary mentions of the knights Bovo and Reiner “de Berg” appear in 1180. Egidius von Berg was named lord of the castle in 1202. In 1413, Arnold von Sierck acquired the complex. A transformation took place in 1580 under Johann von Kriechingen und Pittlingen, who had the castle converted into a Renaissance-style palace. After 1760, ownership was unclear and divided among various principalities. France ceded its rights to Empress Maria-Theresia in 1769, and after the Congress of Vienna, Schloss Berg came into Prussian possession in 1815. In 1910, it passed into bourgeois ownership. The winter of 1944/45 led to its almost complete destruction. Saarland took ownership in 1950 and began reconstruction in 1955. From 1958 to 1984, it served as a school country home.
