On the eastern shore of Lake Starnberg, in the Upper Bavarian municipality of Berg in the Starnberg district, is Berg Castle. Originally built in the 17th century on land acquired by Elector Ferdinand Maria, the castle experienced a heyday of festivities and hunts under Max Emanuel and Karl Albrecht.

Between 1849 and 1851, King Maximilian II had the castle remodeled by Eduard Riedel, adding four neo-Gothic towers and battlements. King Ludwig II later added a fifth, tall north tower, which he named “Isolde,” and used the castle as a summer residence. A telegraph line to Munich was installed for his government affairs. In 1868, Ludwig II hosted Russian Empress Maria Alexandrowna in the castle, which was furnished for her visit. He also had a Moorish kiosk erected in the park and a small chapel built in 1876.
